Project Description
Gerhard Pichel, GPA president, was the program manager on the reconstruction of Terminal 5 for Delta Airlines. The foremost challenge of this project was to make significant modifications to the existing facility while maintaining ongoing operations. Modification was needed to accommodate changes in terminal functions/operations as well as changes in building code. Through creative planning and a well developed implementation plan, the project opened on budget and six months ahead of schedule, allowing Delta to take advantage of the holiday travel season. As a result, Delta’s traffic increased 40% after the facility opened. Honoring these accomplishments, the Project Management Institute (PMI) awarded it with the “Project of the Year” award for “excellence in project management”.
